Stormy Weather

"Stormy Weather" is a traditional folksong from Nova Scotia, collected by Dr. Helen Creighton. The melody is published in her book, "Traditional Songs From Nova Scotia." I was commissioned by the Dr. Helen Creighton Folklore Festival in 1993 to arrange a set of pieces for SATB choir for performance at their festival that year. I chose an ensemble of two pianos and three percussionists. This SA arrangement is based on that original concept.

One of the tricky features of the melody is the fact that it "runs on" with almost no place to breathe, so it's a good piece for introducing the concept of stagger breathing to young choirs. There is an abrupt modulation from D major to Bb major, but shouldn't pose much of a problem for most choirs.
